Bush gets taught!
Democracy’s true definitions...
30/11/2006

Fighting is a habit that dies hard. West Asia is busy vindicating that. Not long before the guns fell silent on the Israel-Lebanon border, Iran has substituted its verbal duels (with USA) with a full fledged military exercise in abject defiance of the Bush Administration. It fired the Shahab-2 and the Shahab-3 missiles in huge numbers, close on the heel of the attempt of the United Nations Security Council to impose sanctions on Iran to prevent it from carrying out its atomic research. Even Palestine is becoming more of a nightmare due to increasing tensions and gun battles between Fatah and Hamas group. Nowadays, Palestine does not even require Israel to be destroyed. They are themselves good enough at it. Add to this the relentless sectarian violence that has become more of a norm in Iraq (and of course, Afghanistan). Clearly, if someday, sanity and civility has to exist in these societies, then it can only be brought in by the people of that place. Countries like India got introduced to Islam almost a thousand years ago, but the religion coexists with other religions, despite the regular ‘cross-border terrorist’ imbroglios, due an undisputable faith within citizens in the tenets of democracy. If only the US had realised it then, that democracy not only meant institutionalising a government ‘for’ the people, but also ‘of’ & ‘by’ the people!
