Drink oil...
For water prices are shooting up
30/11/2006

The debate comes straight from the thin line between facts and fiction. Privatisation of water supplies has been constructed in black and white, flimsily labelling everything associated with the private sector as efficient & competent, while assigning the realm of the opposites to the public sector. Increased number of states, starting from Chattisgarh, have taken initiatives to levy charge and privatise water supplies. But their need to involve multinational companies in management and distribution of drinking water has been heavily contested. Counter arguments have been given stating that internationally post-privatisation, water prices shot upto 46% in England. In other European countries as well, private companies have more or less failed to control pollutants in water. The only thing to rise have been the profits that have sky-rocketed ($3 billion in UK alone). As such, similar moves in India have been disappointing. Not only have the natural rights to water been compromised, but the question as to how the non-paying citizens are going to be dealt with have been unanswered. It is likely in the era of failed governance that the next move perhaps would be to privatise air. So before you end up paying higher, start breathing less!
