Better to die than live like this
A thousand lives ruined at the cost of few mistakes
18/10/2007

So much for thinking that no punishment could be worse than a life sentence. Needless to say that abysmal deaths happen in the prisons owing to gang rivalry, which ends up with quite a few casualties. The dismal medical facilities available makes many to wonder where does the Rs.3.8 crore that Tihar jail claims to spend on medical treatment annually. Compounders or registered practitioners are summoned, whose visits more than often do not materialise. The food available sometimes might just be a dish made out of grass & roots. Around 400-800 prisoners use the same sanitation, blanket meant for one is essentially shared by three while a tuberculosis patient would have to huddle up with two other prisoners under one blanket & encouragement of prostitution right inside jail by the wardens themselves are apt examples of how beleaguered lot the prisoners are. How much more pain does the undeserving prisoners have to witness for a crime which was committed perhaps only once??
