Ragged to death
Thin line between fun & fear
01/11/2007

Despite Supreme Court orders against ragging & harassment in colleges, the last few months have seen frequent incidences of ragging. A recent incident in Delhi, at St. Stephen’s College, resulted in a student getting severe burns on his hands and arms & another incidence in IIHM in Bhopal, caused two girls to be hospitalised, after physical ragging.

As per the Coalition to Uproot Ragging (CURE), more than 50 cases of ragging has been published in leading English dailies in last four months out of which six incidences were of suicides & three were of attempt to suicides. Ominously, whooping 84% of ragging took place in college hostels & more than 30% were sexual in nature. It not only led to deaths (10 deaths in last two years) and severe physical injuries but also suicides by parents as in case of C. Lalitha (mother of a fresher) in September 2006. The incidences reported in the media are just a petite fraction of actual ragging cases, as most of the incidence go unreported & are largely suppressed. To purge this menace, all stake holders need to decimate ragging before it becomes an integral part of college curriculum.
