Miles to go...
... before technology saves lives
15/11/2007
Did someone say that technology is a tool to eliminate woes? Well, yes it is, if used in the right way. How can technology do any good to anyone if knowing the use of technology is nothing but a far cry? One of the world’s 10 deadliest natural disasters happened aeons back in the year 1138 AD in Syria when the Aleppo Earthquake occurred during in which about 230,000 died. But the irony is that years later when the Tsunami happened in India in 2004, about the same number of people expired and worse so is that the Yellow River flood of China in 1931 killed about 2,000,000. It is not just astounding but also intimidating that the death toll owing to natural calamities is only increasing even with the fact that the entire world is exhorting about technological take-off. The scientific community has been making noises about new concepts like Tsunami Warning Systems. Yet one has to wait till the next one strikes to find out whether it is actually in a position to save lives or not. In case of early warning systems for earthquake, the time cushion is only of few seconds which instead of saving lives, takes more due to eventual mad rush and stampede. Our science has a long way to go to save us and provide succour.
