In giving justice
Europe has double standards
29/11/2007

There is a saying, “Justice without force is powerless; force without justice is tyrannical.” It seems to be apt with Spain, the land dictated by Francisco Franco for almost four decades on his own terms. But when, the present Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero thought of giving these unfortunate people their right and justice by prosecuting all criminals involved in murder and civil wars, he found himself alone and in threat of losing his power from other parties.

Spain was at the zenith of prosperity and development in the 16th century. But somehow by the late 20th century, it was no more than a shade of its previous best. During the regime of General Francisco Franco, the country went through years of economic repression and being deprived of basic rights. Over 50,000 persons were executed during the civil war. Other nations that had experienced similar wartime butchery tried giving justice after restoration of order, like in post-Nazi-Germany. Yet in case of Spain, the victims are yet to get justice. While the genocide of the Jews during the WW II still invoke sympathy in hearts of millions, the near holocaust of Spain and its pain has simply gone unnoticed. If Hitler was wrong, then so was Franco. And if the Jews deserved justice, then so does the Spanish people.
