‘IT’s high time...
IT needs to target masses now
29/11/2007

While IT continues to be a major cash cow for the Indian economy and an incredible employment generator, disturbing fact that only less than 3% of Indians owning a personal computer is yet to be made a thing of the past. Information technology still have a low penetration rate… well, a reason that cannot be failed to be noticed is that a desktop in India would eat out 44% of an average Indian’s annual wage. While India needs to continue its cashing on the global economic boom through IT, one needs to accept the fact that it cannot continue like this if the Indian market is not given its due weightage.

IT is not for the sake of IT itself. Even if India has to improve the productivity of agriculture and make the rural mass contribute more towards the economy, it cannot be done, unless they are showered with the same kind of technology that has become so much ubiquitous for the urban Indian. It’s probably IT which can finally bridge the rural-urban divide.
