Suicide continues
Loan waives actually don’t work
15/05/2008

It took just two months to prove that the Rs. 60,000 crore waiver, announced by the finance minister, was of no good to the poor farmers. More than 125 farmers have committed suicide in Vidarbha in last two months. This waiver failed to cover all those framers who are in clutches of moneylenders and who have farms less than two hectares. Leave aside the waiver; there has been no initiative from the Government’s end to address the falling income level of these farmers. The jubilation of the loan waiver overshadowed the matter of fresh loans and credits for coming season. Consider this: out of the total amount allocated for Maharshtra, only Rs. 536 crore i.e. mere 5% will be for Vidarbha, where the suicide toll is reaching new height with time. It is important to understand that there is a need to provide the basic facilities for farming like proper irrigation, quality seeds and modern techniques that can increase the productivity. Most of these rural farmers largely depend on the monsoon. Around 98% of farmers who committed suicide did not have facilities for irrigation. What these farmers needs is not loan waiver but price stabilisation, credit, cheaper inputs, and most importantly social security.
