The VP’s a Dick
Of Mark Twain, ‘Negros’ & VPs...
Yes, we know. It just seems we’re on a US bashing spree. But one final time, do allow us :-) The fear of censorship on books is increasingly having a firm footing in this so called free society. On the one hand is the freedom of speech and freedom of expression, whereas on the other, it is right of the parents to protect their children from obscenity, racism and other prohibited topics. While there are strict guidelines for US regulatory boards to take decisions after evaluating the ‘books’, controversies keep happening.
Mark Twain’s Huckleberry Finn is one such classic embroiled within the controversy. The repeated use of the word ‘Negro’ in the classic has seen virulent objections from African-American communities. While the teaching community has tried to justify Twain’s work on its literary value, the naysayers say that by that legitimacy, even Hitler’s concepts would qualify as quite ‘literary’ in comparison. So should ‘Negro’ be erased from Finn? Well, to take a stand on this issue, one would just need to understand that there’s a man called Richard Bruce Cheney who is still the Vice President of the United States. Yes, you got it! ‘Dick’ is what everybody calls him. And ‘Dick’ is what he’ll be called years henceforth...
