Over the past 25 years, China has undergone rapid economic changes. However, these changes have emerged as a serious threat to minority communities. Critics have alleged that they are being marginalised from all avenues of development. China has also been blamed for militarising minority dominated regions. For records, there are 56 officially recognised minority communities in China at present; and amongst these, the Zhuangs, Huis, Uyghurs, Mongols & Tibetans, are some of the groups that are most backward and detached from all kinds of prosperity, unable to exercise any significant legislative and administrative powers due to intentional exclusion from political participation. But then how have certain local demographic indicators improved? Ironically, the Chinese have practised a strange method for achieving this, and that is by populating the minority regions with the Han population, and thus changing demographics, as well as reducing dissenting voices.
